Gruner Veltliner - GRU 2012

94++ Points - Philip White, InDaily
'Larry Jacobs and Marc Dobson should be delighted with this textbook example of this Austrian variety they chose years ago to trial to perfection at their pioneering Hahndorf vineyard ... it all adds up to a perfumed, complex, highly distinctive white, their best effort yet ... An absolute delight ... Grrrrrruner!'

' ...brimming with character and attitude, with its aromas of citrus, pepper and rocket through to the end of an exceptionally long and persistent palate ...'

Jancis Robinson
' ... real ripe GV aromas and a nice, mouthfilling palate - not to mention very impressive persistence for a bone dry wine with relatively low alcohol.  Many congratulations. Very neat, very varietal and very well balanced.'

Blue-Gold Medal - Sydney International Wine Show 2013

Silver Medal - Alternative Varieties Wine Show 2012

93 Points - Tyson Stelzer, Wine Taste Weekly
'Mark my words: Gruner Veltliner is the next big thing for the Adelaide Hills. New plantings, regional think tanks and experiments are playing out behind the scenes, but Hahndorf Hill was the first to take it to market two years ago. The 2012 will land shortly and it's the most refined yet. Displaying impressive, primary varietal precision of kaffir lime, lime zest and white pepper ...'

93 Points -Jeremy Pringle, Wine Will Eat Itself
'This has the hallmark white pepper, apple and celery that the variety is known for. Limey, acid drive accompanies an intriguing, almost gelatinous feel to the mid-palate before finishing on a crisper, mineral note. Some melon and caramel in there too.'

93 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
'Fennel, pepper, white fruit and an almost green apple flavour. Tasty. It's chalky, tight, racy and fine ... Terrific.'

93 points - Stuart Robinson, The Vinsomniac
' ...good peppery length and mineral nuances dancing around the tongue.  Great example, showing further promise for the variety in the region ...'

Chris Shanahan, The Canberra Times
' ... the proof of the gruner is in the drinking of this dazzling, fresh 2012. It's highly aromatic and flavoursome, with texture, savour and a pleasant bite to the finish.'

Highly Recommended - Clive Hartley, The Australian Wine Guide

'This is certainly a racy, refreshing and very authentic style of gruner veltliner and shows the considerable promise of this variety in the cool climes of the Adelaide Hills.'

Michael Ellis, The Wine Punter
'Keep an eye out for this ... it might just become your new 'go to' summer white.'

Very good - Jesse Lewis, Good Drop
'... a smart example of Grüner.'

This is our third vintage of this new-wave, food-friendly Austrian variety, which we're pioneering in the Adelaide Hills. Three separate fermentations were done with different yeasts - including wild ferments in old barriques - to enhance both complexity and the important textural components. Complex nose of orange peel, stone fruit, root vegetable and struck flint-stone. Full and round on the mouth, yet beautifully balanced with gentle pineapple notes and a core of zesty citrus. Continuously textural with a crystalline purity, a gritty edge of nectarine pip and a salty, slatey mineral tail.

Cost: A$28 per bottle incl. GST      Fully allocated.

White Mischief 2010

Bronze Medal - Australian Small Winemakers Show 2010

89 Points - James Halliday
" ... For a lazy summer day, well chilled."

This Hahndorf Hill classic takes its lead from the so-called 'Super White Wines' from the wine region Friuli, in north-eastern Italy. These Super Whites are invariably blends that include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and other native Italian varieties. White Mischief is a blend of our high-grade, free-run juice from our Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. Fresh on the nose and full and seamless on the palate, this wine has a zesty complexity that makes it the ultimate 'sundowner wine'. Savour it sensuously on the deck as the sun slips beneath the horizon!

Zweigelt - Zsa Zsa Rosé 2012

93 points - Mike Bennie, Wine Business Magazine

91 points - Nick Stock, Good Wine Guide 2013

Bronze Medal - International Wine & Spirit Competition, London 2012

Zweigelt is a unique Austrian red grape variety which is used to make a range of beautiful table wines. This is the first time that Zweigelt has been produced in Australia. Our 'Zsa Zsa' rosé was made from hand-harvested Zweigelt grapes which were gently crushed and then allowed several hour's skin contact to produce the beautiful pomegranate-like hue. The juice was then wild fermented in old French oak barrels.

The nose is loaded with freshly crushed cherries and melon and it is full and unctuous on the palate - yet perfectly balanced by a vibrant, flinty mouthful of cherries and crushed pomegranate pips. It is rounded off by an extraordinary mineral component with a rich textural finish.

This is a rosé for rare roast beef!

" ... attractive and worth trying for something completely different."

 " ... Fabulous ... 9/10." - Max Cruz, The Daily Examiner

"Australia's one and only Blaufränkisch is a wine of striking individuality and charm in the heights of the Adelaide Hills. It's biodynamically farmed from mineral-rich soil flecked with quartz, ironstone and slate. Medium weight, supple and beguiling with violet fragrance, plum and brambly black cherry tones. Svelte, sensual and suedelike, threaded with smouldering Asiatic spice and nuances of forest floor." - Louise Radman, Sumptuous

4 Stars - Trevor Maskell, Daily Telegraph
"It's a rich and layered effort and very impressive ... It's got presence, yet it is soft, fleshy and very delicious."

"It's supple, with juicy, fleshy fruit from cherries to blueberries, really pure, and utterly appealing ... A great alternative to shiraz." - Jane Faulkner, The Age

"'Unique' is a word that can be bandied about too easily but the duo behind this very slick red can rightly claim this one is ... Medium-bodied, supple and elegant with lovely blueberry and cherry notes, it slips down a treat." - Christine Salins, foodwinetravel.com.au

Blaufrankisch is a red grape variety that produces wines of superb quality in its homeland of Austria, where it ranks as the pre-eminent grape in the red wine province of Burgenland. UK wine guru Jancis Robinson has referred to this blueblooded varietal as the 'Pinot Noir of Eastern Europe'. Hahndorf Hill Winery is currently the only producer of Blaufrankisch in Australia. This 2010 vintage has produced a wine of great suppleness and elegance, with a gentle tumble of spice, dark cherries, blueberries, violets and fennel - plus a juicy acidity. It has excellent structure on the palate. The wine is perfectly matched with duck, quail, lamb and venison - and if you ever need to enjoy a red with your favourite seafood, this is it!
