Grüner Veltliner
One of the world's most fashionable white grape varieties - Grüner Veltliner - has taken up residence in the Adelaide Hills!

As the signature white grape of Austria and a varietal with a reputation for making the world's most food-friendly wine, Grüner Veltliner has become the wine of choice in some of the trendiest restaurants and bars in New York, London and San Francisco.

In 2006 Hahndorf Hill Winery imported from Austria three different clones of this exciting white grape, with the aim of producing a fresh, New World version of this wine.

In June 2010 we produced our debut vintage, which we have affectionately named GRU. We are proud to be amongst the first to pioneer this varietal in Australia.

Grüner Veltliner may be new to Australia, yet we believe the Adelaide Hills offers the perfect terroir for this grape. The Adelaide Hills is unique amongst the wine growing regions of Australia in that it offers the magical combination of one of the coolest mean January temperatures together with one of the biggest diurnal variations in temperature.

The complex mix of loamy topsoils generously mixed with blue slate and quartz at our Hahndorf vineyard will help underpin the great minerality for which this variety is famous.

Grüner Veltliner wines can be made in different styles depending on the degree of fruit ripeness and alcohol levels achieved.

The crisper, leaner styles of Grüner Veltliner have a glorious minerality with apple skin, pear, light grapefruit and other citrus flavours, plus an amazing touch of white pepper spice on the finish.

The fuller examples can have lusher, tropical components and are often exposed to additional manipulation in the winery resulting in a more opulent style of wine. These wines are recognised for their excellent ageing potential.

Hahndorf Hill Winery also grows the top red grape from Austria which is called Blaufränkisch (otherwise known as Lemberger in Germany).
