The Adelaide Hills is not only a beautiful wine region in which to live and work, it also ranks as an important ecological asset for the city of Adelaide since it constitutes the watershed area from which 60% of the city's water is drawn.
To help preserve this pristine asset and to underscore our commitment to farm in an environmentally sustainable manner, we have implemented an Environmental Management System (EMS) and a carbon-offsetting program at Hahndorf Hill Winery, and we are in the process of converting our vineyard to a biodynamic operation.
Biodynamics is an enhanced form of organic agriculture and so it prohibits the use of synthetic insecticides, herbicides or fungicides, advocating instead the use of natural, 'homeopathic' sprays and preparations.
We have currently offset all of the carbon emissions involved in our vineyard and cellar door activities, and our aim is to reduce these emissions and to work towards becoming carbon neutral by offsetting all of the embedded carbon in our other winery activities.

The fresh vibrancy of our wines is due to our policy of farming our vineyard in an environmentally friendly way and of keeping our yields low to ensure pure, concentrated flavours.
All the grapes in our vineyard are hand picked to ensure that those carefully nurtured flavours remain locked into the berry before processing.
Our 15-acre property is planted to Shiraz, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, plus two unusual red varieties - Trollinger and Lemberger. The Shiraz is situated on a gentle, well-drained western slope, with mixed gravelly/ loamy soils, whilst the Lemberger and Sauvignon Blanc enjoy the north-facing more level areas.
